The Supreme Court on Monday questioned Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for publicly alleging that adulterated ghee, possibly containing animal fat, was used in the preparation of the renowned Tirupati laddus at Sri Venkateswara Temple. The court emphasized that Naidu made the allegations before an investigation was concluded.
A bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan expressed concern over the politicization of religious matters, stating, “At least, the Gods should be kept away from politics.” The Chief Minister’s statement, made on September 18, preceded the lodging of the FIR on September 25 and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on September 26. The court stressed that leaders in constitutional positions should refrain from making premature public statements, especially when sensitive religious sentiments are involved.
During the hearing, advocate Siddharth Luthra, representing the Tirupati Temple, informed the court that an investigation is ongoing. However, the court noted that no conclusive evidence had been presented to prove that adulterated ghee was used in the laddus.
The bench questioned the necessity of going to the press before an investigation was completed and urged for respect towards religious sentiments. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was asked to seek instructions from the Centre regarding whether a central agency investigation was required.
The case is scheduled for further hearing on Thursday.
