Mehbooba Mufti Halts Election Campaign to Mourn Hezbollah Leader Nasrallah’s Death
  • PublishedSeptember 29, 2024

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has suspended her election campaign in Jammu and Kashmir to show solidarity with Lebanon following the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah, along with his daughter and several Hezbollah members, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut on Friday.

In a statement posted on X, Mufti expressed her grief, stating, “Cancelling my campaign tomorrow in solidarity with the martyrs of Lebanon and Gaza, especially Hassan Nasrallah. We stand with the people of Palestine and Lebanon in this hour of immense grief and exemplary resistance.”

Nasrallah’s death has sparked protests in Jammu and Kashmir, where people took to the streets in Budgam and Srinagar, carrying images of the Hezbollah chief. The general secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, Maulana Yasoob Abbas, also paid tribute to Nasrallah, calling his death a significant loss for the Muslim world. Abbas urged India’s Shia community to observe three days of mourning and requested international intervention to halt the violence in Lebanon and Palestine.

Nasrallah’s death has reverberated across the region, with Hezbollah now facing uncertainty regarding its leadership, as speculation rises over his potential successor.
