A clash broke out between communities during a Ganpati idol immersion procession in Davanagere, Karnataka, on Thursday. The incident occurred when stones were allegedly thrown at the procession while it passed through Aralimara Circle, a locality near a minority-dominated area.
Tensions escalated quickly, leading to a violent clash between the Hindu and Muslim communities. Local police immediately intervened, halting the procession to prevent further escalation. The Ganpati idol was safely moved to a secure location, and the immersion was completed after the necessary religious rites, as confirmed by authorities.
During the clash, a police officer sustained injuries. In response to the unrest, authorities imposed a curfew in the area to restore order and maintain peace. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the incident and identify the individuals responsible for the violence.
A complaint was filed by Ajay, a 36-year-old flower decorator, alleging that 20 individuals attacked the procession with sticks and stones. Police are registering cases against individuals from both communities involved in the clash.
Senior police officer Uma Prashant reassured the public that the situation is now under control, and further investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact cause and extent of the injuries.
