Atishi to Become Delhi’s New Chief Minister After Kejriwal’s Resignation.
Delhi Minister Atishi has been chosen to succeed Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister, following his resignation after a meeting with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. The decision was finalized during a meeting of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators, where party leader Dilip Pandey proposed that Kejriwal decide the next leader. When Kejriwal suggested Atishi, the MLAs unanimously supported her selection as the leader of the legislature party.
Atishi, an Oxford University graduate and a Rhodes scholar, currently holds important portfolios such as Education and Public Works. An MLA from Kalkaji, she became a minister following Manish Sisodia’s arrest in connection to a corruption case. Atishi has been a central figure in AAP’s education reforms and articulated the party’s stance during Kejriwal and Sisodia’s legal challenges.
Her elevation follows Kejriwal’s surprise announcement on Sunday, where he stated that he would step down from his position and only return after the people’s verdict in the upcoming Delhi elections. Assembly elections in the national capital are scheduled for February, but Kejriwal has called for them to be held in November.
