Actor, director, and producer Sohum Shah has officially announced the highly anticipated sequel, Tumbbad 2, following the re-release of the first film to widespread acclaim. In an exclusive interview, Sohum discussed the upcoming sequel and how it stands apart from Maddock Films’ successful horror-comedy universe, which includes Stree and Munjya.
Sohum emphasized that Tumbbad is distinct in its storytelling. “Those films are different from Tumbbad. None of them delve into the realm of ‘dadi-nani ki kahaniyan’ (grandmother’s tales),” he explained. Unlike Stree and Munjya, Tumbbad is set in a historical period and features folklore elements like demons, offering a unique narrative style.
He also expressed gratitude for the audience’s overwhelming response to the re-release, which has fueled excitement for the sequel. “The love and support for Tumbbad have been incredible. It gives us the encouragement to move forward with Tumbbad 2,” Sohum shared. Currently, the film is in pre-production, with the script being finalized.
The first Tumbbad is based on Maharashtrian folklore and was shot at real-life locations in the state. Despite facing multiple delays and rewrites, the film’s success, directed by Rahi Anil Barve and co-produced by Aanand L Rai, has paved the way for its much-anticipated sequel.
With the script near completion, Tumbbad 2 is set to continue its exploration of Indian folklore.
