Netflix Denies Plagiarism Claims by Director Soham Shah Over ‘Squid Game’.

OTT giant Netflix has responded to filmmaker Soham Shah’s plagiarism lawsuit, denying claims that Squid Game copied his 2009 Hindi film Luck. Shah recently filed a federal lawsuit in New York, alleging that the Korean show shares “strikingly similar” elements with his film, including plot, characters, and themes.

In Luck, a group of desperate, debt-ridden individuals are lured into a deadly competition with the promise of a cash prize. Similarly, Squid Game follows 456 financially struggling participants who engage in a series of children’s games, where losing means death.

Reacting to the lawsuit, Netflix stated, “This claim has no merit. Squid Game was created and written by Hwang Dong-hyuk, and we intend to defend this matter vigorously.” Shah, however, claims that the similarities between the two works are beyond coincidence. He also filed a lawsuit against Hwang Dong-hyuk, noting that Squid Game’s story was allegedly written the same year Luck was released worldwide.

Shah claims he conceived the story in 2006, with Luck premiering in 2009. Meanwhile, Squid Game, which became a global sensation in 2021, has a second season scheduled for release on December 26. Netflix stands firm in its defense of the show’s originality, as the legal battle continues.
