Bomb Threat in Springfield Amid Anti-Migrant Conspiracy Theory.
  • PublishedSeptember 13, 2024

Several government buildings and two elementary schools in Springfield, Ohio, were evacuated on Thursday following an emailed bomb threat, heightening tensions in a city already embroiled in controversy. The threat comes as Springfield faces national scrutiny due to a false conspiracy theory about Haitian migrants, amplified by former President Donald Trump.

Springfield authorities, in collaboration with the FBI’s Dayton office, are investigating the source of the threat. Explosive detection teams cleared the listed facilities, ensuring no immediate danger. Schools affected include Fulton Elementary and Springfield Academy of Excellence, with students relocated for safety.

The conspiracy, which falsely accused Haitian immigrants of harming pets, has been widely debunked, yet continues to spread. Trump’s rhetoric during recent rallies and debates has further fueled tensions, with local leaders and residents expressing concern for the community’s safety.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine emphasized the need for understanding, noting that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, who arrived under Temporary Protected Status (TPS), are contributing to the local workforce. Community leaders and clergy have called for unity, holding a press conference to support the Haitian community and promote peace.
