The tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has ignited widespread protests, with new allegations further complicating the investigation. The victim’s family joined doctors in a candlelight vigil, accusing the Kolkata Police of pressuring them to cremate the body hastily and offering bribes to suppress the case.
A video released by BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya showed the victim’s parents claiming they were coerced into recording statements denying the bribery allegations. The parents later revealed that police threatened to derail the investigation if they didn’t comply. West Bengal’s ruling party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), responded by sharing another video where the parents appeared satisfied with the police investigation. The family, however, stated that this video was forcibly recorded days after their daughter’s death.
TMC leader Shashi Panja condemned the politicization of the tragedy, dismissing the BJP’s claims as politically motivated. She also expressed empathy for the doctors protesting the slow investigation. Despite the conflicting narratives, the case has sparked outrage across the state, with citizens demanding justice for the victim and greater transparency in the investigation.
The incident, which occurred on August 9, continues to fuel political tensions, with the BJP accusing the TMC government of orchestrating a cover-up.
