  • PublishedAugust 31, 2024

In light of the recent rape-murder of a woman doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for faster verdicts in cases involving crimes against women to ensure their safety. Speaking at an event marking 75 years of the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister emphasized the urgent need to strengthen judicial processes and ensure that justice is delivered swiftly.

“Atrocities against women and the safety of children are serious concerns for society,” PM Modi stated. He highlighted the importance of fast-tracking legal procedures, referencing the 2019 legislation establishing fast-track courts and witness deposition centers. The Prime Minister stressed the need for further strengthening district monitoring committees to expedite verdicts in cases related to women’s safety.

The Prime Minister’s remarks followed a letter from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who urged the central government to enact stricter legislation and impose exemplary punishments for heinous crimes like rape and murder. In response, the central government reiterated the strength of existing laws, urging state governments to implement them effectively to ensure justice.

PM Modi also noted the progress made over the past decade in reducing delays in the justice system and improving judicial infrastructure, reinforcing his commitment to enhancing the safety and security of women in India.

The call for swifter justice comes as the nation grapples with the tragedy in Kolkata, underscoring the importance of timely and decisive action in protecting the rights and safety of women.
