Former Trump Lawyer Rudy Giuliani Sued by Election Workers Over Florida Luxury Condo

Former Trump Lawyer Rudy Giuliani Sued by Election Workers Over Florida Luxury Condo
  • PublishedAugust 31, 2024

Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea’ “Shaye” Moss, two former Georgia election workers, have filed a civil lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani, the former personal attorney to Donald Trump, alleging that he is attempting to protect his Florida luxury condominium from a $148 million judgment awarded to them in a previous defamation case.

The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, challenges Giuliani’s recent declaration that his Palm Beach condominium is his primary residence. Freeman and Moss claim that Giuliani’s declaration is a strategic move to exploit Florida’s “homestead” law, which shields primary residences from court judgments. The plaintiffs assert that Giuliani primarily resides elsewhere and is falsely claiming the Florida condo as his main home to avoid paying the $148 million judgment.

The judgment stems from a Washington jury’s decision last December, which found Giuliani liable for defaming Freeman and Moss by falsely accusing them of attempting to steal the 2020 U.S. presidential election. Giuliani filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy shortly after the verdict, but the case was dismissed by a federal judge due to his failure to disclose his full financial situation and meet court deadlines.

Freeman and Moss are seeking court permission to enforce an August 8 lien against Giuliani’s Florida condominium and potentially seize the property. The case is being closely watched as it highlights ongoing legal battles stemming from the 2020 election.
