Mamata Dedicates Student Wing’s Foundation Day to Kolkata Rape-Murder Victim: ‘Deeply Saddened
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dedicated the foundation day of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, the party’s student wing, to the victim of the tragic rape and murder at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Addressing the incident, Banerjee expressed her deep sorrow, stating, “We mourn the loss of our sister, whose life was brutally taken. Our hearts go out to all women who have suffered such inhumanity.”
In her message to the students, Banerjee urged them to play a pivotal role in society, encouraging them to stay committed to building a brighter future. “It is the responsibility of the student community to keep society and culture awake, inspiring those around them with hope for a better tomorrow,” she emphasized.
The Chief Minister has been under intense scrutiny, facing demands for her resignation from students, doctors, and BJP leaders in the wake of the incident. The outrage culminated in a ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally, where protesters clashed with police in various parts of Kolkata and Howrah. Despite being deemed “illegal” by the state police, the rally saw significant participation, leading to over 200 arrests.
In response to the police action during the rally, the BJP called for a 12-hour ‘Bangla Bandh,’ disrupting life across the state. Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues its probe into the rape-murder case, focusing on the main accused, Sanjay Roy, and others connected to the incident.
