New Study Reveals Potential Future for Males as Y Chromosome Disappears
  • PublishedAugust 27, 2024

The human Y chromosome, responsible for male development, has been gradually degenerating over millions of years. Recent studies indicate that at its current rate of gene loss, the Y chromosome could vanish within 10 million years, raising concerns about the future of human reproduction.

However, a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences offers hope. Researchers have discovered that the spiny rat, a rodent species from Japan, has managed to survive the loss of its Y chromosome by evolving a new male-determining gene. This finding suggests that humans may also be able to adapt if the Y chromosome disappears.

The study, led by Asato Kuroiwa at Hokkaido University, revealed that the spiny rat’s Y chromosome genes had relocated to other chromosomes. A crucial discovery was a small DNA duplication near the SOX9 gene on chromosome 3, which appears to have taken over the role of the missing SRY gene in male development.

This research highlights the possibility that humans, like the spiny rat, could evolve new mechanisms to ensure male offspring production. While the potential disappearance of the Y chromosome remains a concern, this study suggests that alternative sex-determining systems could emerge, ensuring the continuation of the species.

As we look to the future, these findings offer a glimmer of hope and open new avenues for research into human evolution and sex determination.
