Nepal Emphasizes Balanced Relations with India and China: PM KP Sharma Oli
  • PublishedAugust 27, 2024

Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to maintaining friendly and balanced relations with both India and China. Speaking at a book release event on Monday, the four-time Prime Minister highlighted that while occasional issues with neighbouring countries are natural, they can be resolved through open dialogue and mutual respect.

“We don’t allow our land to be used against any of our neighbours,” PM Oli asserted, emphasizing Nepal’s neutral stance in regional geopolitics. He noted that the country’s diplomatic approach is rooted in honesty, neutrality, and adherence to international principles, ensuring peaceful solutions to conflicts.

Addressing recent challenges, PM Oli called on the Indian government to accept the Nepal-India Eminent Persons Group (EPG) report, which includes recommendations for reviewing the 1950 Peace and Friendship Treaty. He believes that this will facilitate meaningful dialogue and help resolve border issues and other bilateral matters.

Oli also reflected on the significance of the Trade and Transit Treaty signed with China during his previous tenure. The 2016 agreement provided Nepal with access to Chinese sea and land ports, marking a significant milestone in the country’s foreign trade strategy.

PM Oli concluded by stressing that while geopolitics often poses challenges, it should not be used as an excuse for internal weaknesses. He encouraged a justifiable and fact-based approach to resolving disputes and reaffirmed Nepal’s dedication to peaceful, balanced, and friendly relations with both of its neighbouring giants.
