Mohanlal and AMMA Governing Body Resign Following Sexual Assault Allegations
Mohanlal, President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), and the entire 17-member governing body have resigned from their positions following the release of the Hema Committee report. The decision comes in response to serious sexual abuse allegations made against some members of the committee.
On August 27, Mohanlal and his team announced their resignation, citing moral responsibility. The Hema Committee report, made public on August 19, exposed widespread sexual harassment, casting couch practices, pay disparities, and exploitation within the Malayalam film industry. The report prompted several actors to accuse filmmakers, actors, and technicians of sexual misconduct.
In a statement, AMMA expressed hope for a new leadership capable of renewing and strengthening the association. “We are hopeful that AMMA will have a new leadership capable of renewing and strengthening the association. Thanks to everyone for criticising and correcting,” the statement read. A general body meeting will be convened within two months to elect a new governing body.
The resignation follows public and industry scrutiny over AMMA’s silence on the allegations. Siddique, former General Secretary of AMMA, also resigned after being accused of sexual misconduct. The report has led to further accusations against prominent figures in the industry, including filmmakers and actors.
AMMA is committed to addressing these issues and ensuring that the association is led by individuals who can uphold its values and integrity.
