BJP Calls for Polygraph Test on Mamata Banerjee Amid Outrage Over Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder
  • PublishedAugust 27, 2024

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday demanded a polygraph test for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of shielding those responsible for the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run RG Kar hospital in Kolkata. The BJP also called for a lie-detector test on Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goel, condemning his initial statement that labeled the incident as a suicide.

Addressing the media, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia expressed concern over the situation in West Bengal, likening it to a breakdown of constitutional law. He demanded Banerjee’s resignation, criticizing the state’s response to the protests that erupted following the incident.

The BJP’s outrage followed a series of clashes between police and protestors, with opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari accusing the state administration of “brutal repression.” Adhikari condemned the police’s use of water cannons, tear gas, and lathi-charges on peaceful demonstrators during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally, warning of further action if the alleged brutalities continued.

The tragic incident occurred on August 9 when a female doctor was raped and murdered inside a seminar hall at RG Kar hospital. Her autopsy revealed signs of sexual assault and 25 internal and external injuries, contradicting early claims of suicide by the hospital’s ex-principal, Sandip Ghosh, who is now under investigation by the CBI.

The BJP has called for a thorough investigation to ensure the truth is uncovered, emphasizing the need for polygraph tests on key figures involved in the case.
