Twinkle Khanna Applauds ‘Stree 2’ for Role Reversal and Social Commentary.
Actor-turned-author Twinkle Khanna has praised Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor’s latest film, Stree 2, for its innovative role reversal and strong social message. In her recent column for The Times of India, Twinkle highlighted how the film cleverly subverts traditional horror tropes by suggesting that women are safer in the dark with ghosts than with men.
Twinkle’s column, titled “Why Ghosts Don’t Scare the Indian Stree,” delves into the frightening realities women face daily, contrasting them with the less terrifying elements of horror films. She referenced recent tragic incidents, such as the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata and the sexual abuse of two four-year-olds in Badlapur, to underscore her point. Twinkle expressed concern that women are still taught to avoid certain places and times of day to stay safe, a lesson passed down through generations.
In her critique, Twinkle argued that it is high time for society to enforce laws and safety measures to protect women in public spaces, rather than confining them at home. Until then, she wryly remarked, it may indeed be safer for women to encounter a ghost in a dark alley than a man.
Directed by Amar Kaushik, Stree 2 has not only sparked important conversations but has also achieved significant box office success, recently crossing the Rs 500 crore mark. The film features cameos by Akshay Kumar, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Varun Dhawan.
