Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder: Accused Denies Confession, Claims Innocence
  • PublishedAugust 25, 2024

Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, has retracted his earlier confession, claiming he is being framed. Roy, who had initially admitted to the crime, now asserts his innocence, telling jail guards he had no involvement in the incident. This reversal comes as Roy is set to undergo a polygraph test, after the initial attempt was postponed due to technical issues.

Despite Roy’s claims, investigators from the CBI and Kolkata Police remain skeptical, citing inconsistencies in his statements. An officer revealed that Roy failed to explain the fresh injuries on his body or his presence in the hospital building at the time of the crime, as captured on CCTV. The footage shows him in the corridor leading to the seminar hall where the crime occurred, just minutes before the victim was attacked.

The incident occurred on August 9, when the doctor’s body was discovered in the seminar hall after she went to rest during a 36-hour shift. Her autopsy revealed multiple injuries, both external and internal. Roy, who was caught on CCTV ogling the victim the day before, is now under tight security in jail, where his psychoanalytic profile has depicted him as a pervert with an “animal-like instinct” and no remorse for the crime.

As the investigation continues, the CBI has interrogated over 15 people, including police officers and civic volunteers, in connection with the case.
