Supreme Court Pushes for Justice in Kolkata Doctor’s Tragic Rape-Murder Case

The Supreme Court is actively pursuing justice in the harrowing case of a postgraduate trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On August 22, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra resumed hearing on this suo moto case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), ordered by the court, is set to submit a status report on its ongoing investigation in a sealed cover.

The case has sparked nationwide outrage, with protests erupting across India. The Supreme Court has also criticized the West Bengal government for its mishandling of the situation, particularly regarding the mob vandalism at the hospital during peaceful protests. Amid escalating protests, key officials at the hospital, including the new principal, were removed from their positions.

In response to the widespread unrest, the Supreme Court has established a national task force to address safety concerns for medical professionals, with a particular focus on women. Resident doctors, initially on strike, have been assured by the court that no adverse action will be taken against them once they resume their duties. Meanwhile, prominent figures like former cricketer Sourav Ganguly have joined candlelight protests, further amplifying calls for swift and strict justice.

The court continues to monitor the situation closely, with the next hearing expected to bring further developments in this critical case.
