Former Jharkhand CM Champai Soren to Launch New Political Party Amid JMM Rift

Former Jharkhand CM Champai Soren to Launch New Political Party Amid JMM Rift
  • PublishedAugust 21, 2024

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren announced plans on Wednesday to form a new political party, signaling a break from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the party where he spent most of his political career. Amid escalating tensions within the JMM, Soren emphasized that he is not retiring from politics and remains open to alliances.

Soren revealed his intentions after what he described as “bitter humiliation” during his tenure as chief minister. He expressed frustration over key government programs being canceled without his knowledge and hinted at dissatisfaction with the JMM leadership. “After so much humiliation, I was forced to look for an alternative path,” Soren shared on social media, adding that his decision was driven by a desire to protect his self-respect, not power.

When asked about the time constraints before the state elections, Soren confidently asserted that forming a new party would be swift, even suggesting it could be done within a week. He also left the door open for potential alliances, saying he would consider joining forces with a “good friend” along the way.

Soren’s announcement follows his visit to Delhi, sparking rumors of a possible alignment with the BJP. However, Jharkhand BJP chief Babulal Marandi denied any discussions with Soren about joining the party. Soren, who assumed the CM office briefly after Hemant Soren’s resignation, saw his tenure end when Hemant was re-elected as JMM leader and returned to power. Now, Champai Soren is set to carve out a new political path, with his next moves keenly awaited by the state’s political landscape.
