Union Minister Jitendra Singh has requested the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to cancel its recent advertisement for lateral entry into top central ministry posts following opposition backlash. In a letter to UPSC Chairperson Preeti Sudan, Singh cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on aligning lateral entry with the principles of equity and social justice enshrined in the Constitution, particularly regarding reservations.
Singh highlighted that reservations in public employment are crucial to addressing historical injustices and promoting inclusivity. The ad, which sought applications for 45 positions, including joint secretaries and directors, sparked political controversy, with opposition parties and NDA allies criticizing the absence of reservation provisions.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the move, labeling it an attack on Dalits, OBCs, and Adivasis. Similarly, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav called it a “backdoor” tactic to bypass reservations. NDA allies, including Janata Dal (United) and Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party, also voiced concerns.
Despite the criticism, the Centre defended the lateral entry process, noting its long-standing use since the 1970s under Congress-led governments. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured that SC/ST recruitment would not be impacted, while Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal pointed out historical precedents of lateral entry under Congress rule, emphasizing that the Modi government is making the process more systematic.
