In a deeply emotional segment of the newly released docu-series ‘Angry Young Men,’ renowned writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar reflects on his harrowing early days in Mumbai and his remarkable journey from deprivation to success. Streaming exclusively on Prime Video from today, ‘Angry Young Men’ offers an intimate look into Akhtar’s challenging path to prominence.

Akhtar candidly shares his experiences of severe hardship, revealing how he often went hungry and lived in dire conditions. Recalling his early struggles, Akhtar says, “I decided to come to Bombay with hopes of working as an assistant director. I was sure that after a couple of years, I’d become a director.” His poignant recollection of living on railways stations, parks, and studio compounds highlights his resilience and determination.

In a particularly moving moment, Akhtar’s wife, Shabana Azmi, recounts a time when he had gone three days without food, reflecting his resolve to change his fate. Akhtar shares that he never considered seeking help from his family, emphasizing his commitment to forging his own path.
