Amitabh Bachchan’s transformation into the iconic ‘Angry Young Man’ of Indian cinema is the focus of the new docuseries ‘Angry Young Men,’ now streaming on Prime Video. The series reveals how Bachchan’s legendary role in the 1973 film ‘Zanjeer’ was initially turned down by many top actors, including Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, and Dharmendra, due to its unconventional portrayal of a hero.

‘Angry Young Men’ sheds light on the film’s groundbreaking approach, highlighting why leading stars at the time rejected the role. Salim Khan explains, “This hero doesn’t sing songs or engage in romance; he’s authentic and true to the character.” Javed Akhtar emphasizes that the film’s integrity came from not compromising the script’s unique vision.

Actor Sachin Pilgaonkar elaborates on why Dev Anand declined, stating that Anand believed audiences would not accept him without the customary songs. Despite these challenges, director Prakash Mehra and writers Salim-Javed remained committed to their original vision, showcasing their courage and dedication.

At the time ‘Zanjeer’ was offered to Amitabh Bachchan, he was struggling with a series of flops and had limited choices. His wife, Jaya Bachchan, who initially hesitated due to the film’s male-centric nature, agreed to star opposite him, drawn by the opportunity to spend more time with her fiancé and the significance of the role.

The docuseries ‘Angry Young Men’ provides an insightful look into the making of a cinematic revolution and is now available for streaming on Prime Video.
