Nationwide Outcry Over Gruesome Rape-Murder of Kolkata Trainee Doctor; Protests and Arrests Surge
The brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College has ignited nationwide outrage, with protests sweeping across the country. The victim’s body was discovered in a semi-naked state on Friday morning, showing signs of severe physical assault and sexual violence. The autopsy revealed injuries on various parts of her body, indicating she was sexually assaulted before being strangled and smothered to death.
Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer unaffiliated with the medical college, has been arrested in connection with the crime. Following his arrest, Roy was placed under 14-day police custody, facing charges of rape and murder under sections 64 and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The incident has triggered massive protests, particularly among the medical community. Doctors across Delhi plan to hold a protest march today, demanding a thorough investigation and stringent punishment for the perpetrator. Meanwhile, the Delhi Medical Association will lead a candlelight vigil at India Gate this evening.
Amid rising tensions, a large group of unidentified men vandalized RG Kar Medical College during ongoing protests by junior doctors. Allegations have surfaced accusing “TMC goons” of orchestrating the attack under the orders of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In response, the CBI has taken over the investigation, sending a team of senior officials, including medical and forensic experts, to Kolkata. Mamata Banerjee is set to lead a protest rally on Saturday, seeking justice for the victim.
