Doctors Nationwide Threaten Strike Over Kolkata Rape-Murder Case
In response to the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, doctors from various hospitals in Delhi are holding a joint protest today, demanding swift justice and stricter laws to prevent such heinous crimes. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the case, summoning eight doctors and other medical staff from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for questioning.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with 10 individuals arrested and three detained for vandalism at the hospital during a nationwide ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest. The Delhi Medical Association’s President, Dr. Alok Bhandari, has called for a 24-hour strike starting Saturday.
Resident Doctor’s Associations (RDA) from AIIMS Delhi, Maulana Azad Medical College, and others will conduct a joint protest march at 2 pm today. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also announced a nationwide 24-hour withdrawal of services by doctors starting from 6 am on Saturday.
In West Bengal, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) has called for a 12-hour strike, while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress plans a rally on August 17. Additionally, the BJP’s Mahila Morcha will hold a candlelight march across West Bengal, and the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) will protest in Mumbai.
