A peaceful protest at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital took a violent turn when a mob stormed the premises, vandalizing property and assaulting doctors who were protesting the recent rape and murder of a fellow doctor. Anupam Roy, a final-year MBBS student and eyewitness, described the attack as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the protest, which was led by female nurses, doctors, and students.
The incident occurred late Wednesday night when unidentified miscreants entered the hospital grounds, damaging vehicles, public property, and sections of the hospital, including the Emergency ward and OPD. Several CCTV cameras were also destroyed during the attack. Despite the presence of police, Roy claimed that law enforcement was largely unresponsive, citing a lack of orders to intervene.
Roy recounted how the protestors tried to protect the female participants by moving them to a safer location within the medical college. However, the mob continued their rampage, ignoring pleas to cease their actions. The violence left the protestors scrambling for safety, with many alleging that the attack was a coordinated effort to break their morale.
The incident has sparked outrage among the medical community, with protesters vowing to continue their fight despite the intimidation. Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee has called for the arrest of those responsible for the violence. Meanwhile, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal downplayed the situation, blaming a “malicious media campaign” for exacerbating tensions.
The CBI has since taken over the investigation into the doctor’s rape and murder, further intensifying the spotlight on this tragic case.
