Political Firestorm Erupts Over Alleged Evidence Tampering in Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder Case
  • PublishedAugust 14, 2024

A fresh controversy has engulfed the investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Authorities at the hospital face accusations from political groups, including the BJP and Left-wing organizations, of tampering with evidence by initiating renovation work near the crime scene.

Amit Malviya, BJP IT cell head, claimed that walls within the Chest Medicine Department—where the doctor was assaulted—were demolished, potentially destroying crucial evidence. The Left-affiliated Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) echoed these concerns, protesting outside the hospital and alleging a cover-up to protect influential individuals.

The controversy escalated when a doctor from the Joint Forum of Doctors suggested the victim was gang-raped, citing the postmortem report. These developments prompted the Calcutta High Court to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case.

As the CBI team arrived in Kolkata, political leaders, including BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, accused the state government of shielding the culprits. The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) also called for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services in solidarity with the victim, further intensifying the political tensions surrounding the case.
