Understanding Post-Menstrual Syndrome: What You Need to Know
  • PublishedAugust 13, 2024

Women experiencing mood swings and fatigue after their periods may be facing post-menstrual syndrome (PMS). This condition, while less studied than premenstrual syndrome, affects 20-30% of women and manifests with lingering symptoms even after menstruation has ended.

Dr. Nazia Dalwai, a Mumbai-based gynaecologist, defines post-menstrual syndrome as a cluster of physical, emotional, and behavioral symptoms occurring within the first week after menstruation. Hormonal changes, genetic factors, and lifestyle disorders are identified as underlying causes.

Common symptoms include mood swings, irritability, fatigue, anxiety, bloating, headaches, and sleep disturbances. “Symptoms are similar to those before menstruation but appear after your period ends,” notes Dr. Apurva Gupta, consultant obstetrician at Daffodils by Artemis in Delhi. Although less severe compared to premenstrual syndrome, these symptoms can disrupt daily life.

Factors contributing to post-menstrual syndrome include hormonal sensitivity, thyroid disorders, chronic stress, and lifestyle choices. Women who are overweight, have poor sugar management, or lead an unhealthy lifestyle are more susceptible. Nutritionist Anupama Menon emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet and regular exercise in managing symptoms.

Management Tips:

  • Maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
  • Address any underlying health conditions or stress.
  • Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or significantly impact daily life.
