Kolkata Doctor’s Tragic Death Sparks Protests and Deadline for Justice
The shocking rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has ignited widespread protests, with junior doctors across West Bengal ceasing work to demand justice. The Kolkata Police have summoned four junior doctors who had dinner with the victim before the crime, along with other hospital staff, for further questioning.
The victim’s body was discovered in a seminar hall on Friday, and a civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, was arrested on Saturday in connection with the crime. Amid mounting pressure, junior doctors have set a deadline of August 14 for the police to complete their investigation, pressing for a magisterial probe.
Healthcare services have been severely affected as junior doctors continued their strike, leaving senior doctors to manage the influx of patients at government hospitals. Long queues formed at outpatient departments, with some surgeries postponed due to the strike.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the victim’s family and issued a deadline of August 18 for the Kolkata Police to solve the case, warning that the Central Bureau of Investigation would take over if progress isn’t made.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also intervened, urging Union Health Minister JP Nadda to enact a special central law to protect doctors from violence and attacks. The IMA’s demands include declaring hospitals as safe zones and implementing strict security measures.
As the deadline looms, the medical community and the public await justice for the young doctor whose life was tragically cut short.
