Mamata Banerjee Promises CBI Probe into Kolkata Doctor’s Rape-Murder if Police Fail to Solve Case
  • PublishedAugust 12, 2024

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee pledged on Monday to transfer the investigation of the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the police fail to solve the case by Sunday. Banerjee, who visited the victim’s family, assured them that her government is committed to delivering justice and vowed to seek the death penalty for the accused.

“If the police are unable to solve this by Sunday, we will hand over the case to the CBI, though the central agency’s success rate is very low,” Banerjee stated, as reported by PTI. She emphasized that the state government has no objections to a CBI investigation if the students demand it, adding, “If they do not trust the West Bengal government, they can approach any investigating agency; we have no objection.”

The case has sparked widespread protests, leading to the resignation of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s principal, Sandip Ghosh, who cited false and politically motivated allegations against him. The autopsy of the 28-year-old victim revealed shocking details, including severe injuries and signs of brutal assault.

Banerjee’s promise of a potential CBI probe comes amidst growing pressure from students and the medical community, who are demanding swift and transparent justice for the victim.
