Supreme Court Denies NEET-PG Exam Postponement

Supreme Court Denies NEET-PG Exam Postponement
  • PublishedAugust 9, 2024

On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected a petition to postpone the NEET-PG examination scheduled for Sunday. The court dismissed concerns raised about the allocation of exam centres and the normalisation of marks for two batches, emphasizing that such issues do not warrant a delay.

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stated, “We cannot devise a new education policy, and this is not a perfect world.” The petitioners had argued that one batch might receive a more difficult question paper than another and that the formula for normalisation should be disclosed before the exam. They also complained about inconvenient exam centre locations, as they were only revealed two days before the exam.

The court highlighted the broader impact of delaying the exam, noting that “two lakh students and four lakh parents will suffer” if the petition were granted. Chief Justice Chandrachud further remarked, “We cannot put the careers of so many candidates at risk just because of these petitioners.”

Initially scheduled for June 23, the NEET-PG exam was postponed by the Union Health Ministry due to alleged irregularities in other competitive exams. The Supreme Court’s decision ensures the exam will proceed as planned, maintaining the schedule and minimizing disruptions for the majority of candidates.
