Student Leader Nahid Islam at the Forefront of Protests Leading to Sheikh Hasina’s Resignation.

Nahid Islam, a prominent student leader and human rights defender, has emerged as a key figure in the recent wave of protests in Bangladesh that culminated in the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Nahid, currently studying in the Sociology Department at Dhaka University, serves as one of the national coordinators for the Students Against Discrimination Movement.

The movement, initially sparked by the reinstatement of a 30% quota for descendants of war veterans and freedom fighters in government jobs, quickly gained momentum and transformed into a broader anti-government protest. The demonstrators argued that the quota system was discriminatory and manipulated for political gains.

Nahid Islam has been outspoken in his criticism of Sheikh Hasina’s government, describing the ruling Awami League as deploying “terrorists” to suppress dissent. His leadership galvanized thousands of students and citizens across the country to join the cause.

On July 19, 2024, Nahid was abducted by at least 25 men in plain clothes from a house in Sabujbagh. He endured torture and interrogation before being found unconscious under a bridge in Purbachal. He was kidnapped again on July 26 from Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital in Dhanmondi, with individuals claiming to be from various intelligence agencies. The police have denied any involvement in both incidents.

Despite these ordeals, Nahid Islam remained resolute in his mission. On Monday, protesters defied a nationwide curfew, stormed the Prime Minister’s residence, and declared victory for the people’s movement.

Nahid Islam’s courageous leadership has inspired a nation and highlighted the power of student activism in driving political change.
