Azerbaijani archer Yaylagul Ramazanova has captured global admiration at the 2024 Paris Olympics with her remarkable performance, competing while six-and-a-half months pregnant. At 35, Ramazanova defied expectations and showcased extraordinary sportsmanship in the women’s individual recurve archery event.
In a heartwarming Instagram post, Ramazanova shared her experience, stating, “I felt my baby kick me before I shot this last arrow and then I shot a 10.” Her touching revelation has resonated with fans, sparking an outpouring of support. One comment praised the strength of pregnant women, while another humorously suggested awarding a mini medal to her baby at birth.
Ramazanova, who is only the second Azerbaijani archer to compete at the Olympics, made headlines with a significant upset against 28th-ranked Chinese archer An Qixuan in the 1/32 elimination round. She was later eliminated by Germany’s Michelle Kroppen in the 1/16 round.
Ramazanova also spoke to Xinhua about her unique journey, expressing that her pregnancy made her feel more connected to her sport. “I felt that I was not fighting alone but with my baby,” she said.
Ramazanova’s inspiring story follows the participation of Egypt’s Nada Hafez, who also competed while seven months pregnant. Both athletes have demonstrated extraordinary dedication and resilience.
