A Class 3 student, Tarun Kumar, has suffered severe abuse at the Ramakrishna Ashram in Raichur after being accused of stealing a pen. Allegations surfaced on Sunday that the young boy was beaten, tortured, and locked up for three days by the ashram’s in-charge, Venugopal, and others.
According to reports, Tarun Kumar, who was residing at the ashram due to his family’s financial difficulties, was brutally attacked by Venugopal and his aides. The child recounted being beaten with firewood and a bat, resulting in severe bruises and swollen eyes. The abuse reportedly included being forced to beg at a railway station.
The incident came to light when Tarun’s mother visited the ashram and discovered her son’s injuries. She stated that Tarun was falsely accused of stealing a pen, explaining that he had merely picked up a fallen pen and moved it. The family vehemently denies the theft allegation, asserting that the punishment was excessively harsh.
Child rights activist Sudarshan has intervened, ensuring the boy’s rescue and bringing the matter to the attention of the Women and Child Welfare Ministry. An FIR has been lodged against the accused individuals, and the boy is currently hospitalized, receiving treatment for his injuries.
The case highlights critical concerns about child safety and the need for stringent regulations to prevent such incidents in institutions responsible for children’s care.
