  • PublishedAugust 3, 2024

Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh expressed unwavering determination following India’s historic 3-2 victory over Australia at the Paris Olympics 2024. This win, achieved on August 2, marks the first time an Indian hockey team has defeated Australia in Olympic Games in 52 years, with the previous victory occurring in Munich in 1972.

In an exhilarating match, India took the lead with a goal by Abhishek in the 12th minute, followed by a second goal by Harmanpreet within the same minute. Harmanpreet added another goal early in the third quarter, with Australia’s Blake Govers narrowing the gap towards the end, setting up a thrilling finish.

Post-match, Harmanpreet Singh shared his enthusiasm and focus on the upcoming challenges. “We are giving everything to win India its ninth hockey gold. This victory is a significant milestone, but the main tournament starts now. The quarterfinals and semifinals are crucial, and we are committed to giving our best,” he stated.

Harmanpreet highlighted the team’s strategic approach and resilience: “We started strong and maintained pressure throughout. Our strategy was to score the first goal, and we managed the game well despite the intense Australian press.”

This win comes after a series of seven defeats to Australia earlier in the year, with India aiming to overcome setbacks and secure a gold medal.
