Wayanad, Kerala – August 2, 2024: A devastating series of landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 308 lives, with rescue operations now entering their fourth day. Triggered by heavy rainfall in the hilly areas, the landslides have caused extensive damage, trapping numerous individuals under debris and in collapsed buildings.

To expedite the search for survivors, a drone-based radar system from Delhi will be deployed. The rescue efforts, which face significant challenges due to treacherous terrain and destroyed infrastructure, involve a joint team comprising the Indian Army, NDRF, Coast Guard, and Indian Navy. These teams, supported by locals and forest department employees, will conduct extensive searches across six designated zones.

The rescue operations are further bolstered by 25 ambulances crossing the Bailey Bridge constructed by the Indian Army, which collapsed earlier due to the landslides. Additionally, four more rescue dogs from Tamil Nadu have been brought in to aid the six canines already on the ground.

Prominent leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are overseeing the relief efforts and are set to meet with local leaders and district officials today. Their presence underscores the severity of the disaster and the commitment to supporting affected communities.

US President Joe Biden has extended his condolences to the families of the victims and praised the bravery and dedication of the rescue teams working under challenging conditions.

With the India Meteorological Department predicting more rain in the coming days and issuing a red alert for several districts, the focus remains on saving lives and mitigating further damage. The rescue teams are working tirelessly to bring relief to the affected areas as the situation continues to evolve.
