Three-Storey Building Collapses in Navi Mumbai Amid Heavy Rain, Rescue Operations Underway
Navi Mumbai, July 27, 2024 – A three-storey building in Shahbaz village, Navi Mumbai, collapsed early Saturday morning amid heavy rainfall, trapping several people under the debris. The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 AM.
Kailas Shinde, Commissioner of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, reported that two individuals have been rescued so far, while several others are feared to be trapped. “The building collapsed around 5:00 AM. It is a G+3 structure. Two people have been rescued, and two are likely trapped. The NDRF team is here, and rescue operations are underway,” Shinde stated.
The Navi Mumbai Deputy Fire Officer, Purushottam Jadhav, added, “We received a call about the collapse at 4:50 AM. Two people have been rescued, and efforts are ongoing to rescue those trapped.”
Teams from the police, fire brigade, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on-site, working tirelessly to reach those buried under the rubble. The rescue operations are being conducted with utmost urgency to ensure the safety of all trapped individuals.
This collapse coincides with an orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for several districts in Maharashtra, including Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, and Satara, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall. Mumbai, which experienced a brief respite from rain on Friday, is under a yellow alert for Saturday, anticipating heavy showers in isolated areas.
The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Chandrapur, Gondia, and Gadchiroli districts. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in these areas, while no orange alert has been issued for Maharashtra from July 28 to 30.
