President Joe Biden Ends Re-election Bid, Calls for Unity and New Leadership
  • PublishedJuly 25, 2024

In a heartfelt address to the nation, President Joe Biden announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, emphasizing the need to “pass the torch to a new generation” to unite the country. The 81-year-old President, citing his commitment to defending democracy, urged Americans to support Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.

“I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. That is the best way to unite our nation,” Biden stated. He emphasized the importance of younger voices and highlighted his dedication to the country over holding office. “I revere this office, but I love my country more. In the defence of democracy, which is at stake, it’s more important than any title.”

Biden’s decision follows a challenging debate against Republican candidate Donald Trump and growing concerns about his fitness for office. Prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, had called for his exit.

Endorsing Kamala Harris, Biden described her as “experienced, tough, and capable” of facing Trump in the upcoming election. “She’s been an incredible partner and leader. Now the choice is up to you, the American people.”

Highlighting the critical nature of this election year, Biden called on Americans to choose between “hope and hate, unity and division.” He invoked the legacy of past presidents and promised to complete his term by addressing key issues, including the war in Gaza, support for Ukraine, and Supreme Court reform.
