  • PublishedJuly 25, 2024

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and Maharashtra as the region braces for “extremely heavy rainfall.” The forecast indicates that Maharashtra will experience intense rainfall until tomorrow, with Gujarat also facing severe weather conditions over the next three days.

Gujarat is currently grappling with severe flooding, which has resulted in eight fatalities as of July 24, bringing the total rain-related deaths to 61. In response to the crisis, the National and State Disaster Response Forces (NDRF and SDRF) have been deployed to assist in rescue and relief operations.

Mumbai, accustomed to heavy monsoon rains, is under a red alert as the city prepares for substantial downpours. The IMD has extended warnings to other regions, including Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, and Goa, which are also on high alert for heavy rainfall.

Forecasts predict that northwest India, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan, will experience heavy rains until July 28, while Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are expected to see significant rainfall, with Punjab and Haryana on alert for July 25 and Uttar Pradesh over the next few days. South peninsular India will face very heavy rainfall in Karnataka on July 25, with Telangana and Andhra Pradesh also experiencing heavy showers. Kerala will see heavy rainfall until July 27.

The eastern and northeastern states, including Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and others, are expected to face isolated heavy rainfall through the end of July.
