Heavy Rainfall Claims Lives in Pune, Mumbai Records Second Wettest July

  • PublishedJuly 25, 2024

Amid relentless rainfall, Mumbai has recorded its second wettest July with over 170 cm of rainfall, while several regions in Maharashtra continue to face heavy downpours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Mumbai has surpassed 150 cm of rainfall this month with six days remaining, marking its second-highest July rainfall in history. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar assessed the situation, issuing directives for heightened alertness and active rescue and relief operations through discussions with Divisional Commissioners and officials in Mumbai, Pune, and Thane.

Tragically, three men in Pune were electrocuted on Thursday morning while attempting to move their submerged handcart amid the heavy rains. Additionally, the IMD reported intense rainfall across other areas of Maharashtra, with fatalities rising in the past 24 hours.

In response to the severe weather, Raigad district administration declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Thursday. Similar measures were taken in Palghar’s Wada and Vikramgad sub-divisions, where a ‘red alert’ has been issued for potential extreme weather conditions.

Kolhapur district is also on alert as the Panchganga river reached 42.2 feet at Rajaram weir, just 8 inches below the danger mark of 43 feet. In Pune, the Khadakwasla dam is releasing water at a rate of 9,400 cusec due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas, prompting a warning to residents in low-lying areas.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for the ‘ghat’ sections in Pune district, advising authorities to prepare for severe weather conditions.
