Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget as ‘Kursi Bachao’ Strategy
  • PublishedJuly 23, 2024

In a scathing critique of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Union Budget, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has labeled it as the “Kursi Bachao” Budget, accusing the government of prioritizing appeasement over genuine public welfare. Gandhi alleged that the budget is tailored to please BJP’s allies and crony capitalists, neglecting the needs of ordinary Indians.

Gandhi’s criticism stems from his claim that the budget largely mirrors promises made in the Congress party’s manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He pointed out instances where schemes and incentives outlined in the Congress manifesto appeared to have been replicated without due credit or comprehensive implementation.

Echoing Gandhi’s sentiments, other Congress leaders such as P. Chidambaram and Jairam Ramesh also expressed dissatisfaction, asserting that the budget failed to provide substantive benefits to the common populace. Chidambaram specifically highlighted the adoption of Congress’s proposals on employment-linked incentives and apprenticeship schemes, albeit with what he described as arbitrary targets rather than a comprehensive guarantee for all eligible individuals.

In contrast, Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised the budget as pro-people and pro-development, emphasizing its alignment with the government’s vision for a prosperous and empowered Bharat.

The budget announcement comes amidst political tensions, including recent disagreements over state-specific demands, such as Bihar’s special status, which were not addressed in the budget despite earlier discussions.

Overall, the budget has sparked contentious debates within political circles, with opposition leaders criticizing its alleged lack of inclusivity and real benefits for the wider population.
