In a decisive move to address concerns among major Democratic donors, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris assured supporters that the party is poised for victory in the upcoming presidential election. Her statement comes amid growing calls from within the party for President Joe Biden to step down from the race.
“We are going to win this election,” Vice President Harris stated during a call arranged on short notice to alleviate donor anxieties, according to a participant on the call. “We know which candidate in this election puts the American people first: Our president, Joe Biden.”
The call followed President Biden’s commitment to continue his 2024 campaign and the Democratic Party’s plans to expedite his nomination process. Despite these assurances, at least nine Democratic lawmakers urged Biden to withdraw from the race on Friday. According to Reuters, multiple Democratic sources involved in campaign events reported that several of Biden’s fundraisers were put on hold as donors considered withholding financial support.
Donors were invited to the 30-minute briefing to discuss “urgent, emerging needs,” as per a copy of the invitation seen by Reuters. Vice President Harris attended the call “at the direct request of senior advisers to the president,” one participant noted, with another individual familiar with the situation confirming this account.
The Vice President’s reassurances aim to bolster confidence among key financial backers as the Democratic Party navigates internal calls for leadership changes and prepares for a crucial election campaign.
