Karnataka Minister Advocates for Local Job Quotas Despite Industry Concerns

Karnataka’s IT minister, Priyank Kharge, emphasized that Kannadigas should have the first right to jobs in the state. Although the private sector quota bill has been put on hold due to industry confusion, Kharge assured that it will eventually be implemented.

Kharge highlighted that the bill, introduced by the state’s labour department, requires inter-ministerial consultations before being finalized. “Everything will be done within the law to avoid legal challenges,” Kharge said, referencing Haryana’s similar law, which was struck down by the courts for violating constitutional rights.

The Karnataka cabinet, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, recently approved a bill mandating a 75% reservation for local candidates in non-management jobs and 50% in management positions. Kharge argued that local residents should benefit from job opportunities, especially when industries are established on their land.
