Highway Horror: Hathras Collision Leaves Community in Grief, Authorities in Action
  • PublishedJuly 11, 2024

In Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, a tragic incident unfolded on Thursday morning when a double-decker sleeper bus collided with a truck near Toli village of Thana Sikandrarao. The collision resulted in the death of two individuals, with sixteen others sustaining injuries, as confirmed by district magistrate Ashish Kumar. The bus, reportedly driven negligently, rammed into a parked truck by the roadside, causing significant damage and casualties.

Upon receiving the news, Hathras Superintendent of Police Nipun Aggarwal promptly led a rescue operation at the accident site. The injured were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and directed officials to expedite rescue efforts and ensure proper care for the injured, as stated by an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office.

This tragic incident follows closely on the heels of another deadly accident in Unnao, where a similar double-decker bus collision claimed eighteen lives and left nineteen injured on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding both accidents, with preliminary reports suggesting speeding as a factor in the Hathras collision, which involved a bus traveling from Motihari, Bihar.

The aftermath of the collision was chaotic, with the bus and the truck overturned, leaving debris scattered along the highway. Emergency services, including cranes, were deployed to clear the wreckage and aid the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased, underscoring the severity of the tragedy and the government’s response.

Both incidents underscore the critical need for stringent safety measures and enforcement on highways to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
