Minister Extends Financial Aid to Punjabi Folk Singer’s Daughter After Distress Call
  • PublishedJuly 4, 2024

Days after Glory Bawa, daughter of renowned Punjabi folk singer and Padma Bhushan awardee Gurmeet Bawa, shared her financial struggles in a viral video, Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Dhaliwal visited her home and presented her with a Rs 1 lakh cheque. Amritsar DC Ghanshyam Thori also provided another Rs 1 lakh cheque from the District Red Cross Society.

Glory Bawa, the sole earning member of her family, has faced financial difficulties since the passing of her mother in 2021 and father, Kirpal Bawa, four months ago. The family’s financial woes were exacerbated by the illegal occupation of their five shops near the Fatehgarh Churian bypass, blocking a crucial income source.

In her video, Glory appealed for support, highlighting the decline of the Punjabi folk music industry. “There are no patrons, no shows, and many folk artists have faded away from public memory,” she said. She urged CM Bhagwant Mann to provide financial stability to folk artists through a new policy and pension scheme for elderly artists. Dhaliwal assured action against the illegal occupants of her shops and expressed sorrow over the plight of artists who brought Punjabi culture to global attention.
