Zika Virus Looms: Pune Faces Health Crisis with Reported Cases
  • PublishedJune 27, 2024

Pune has reported two cases of Zika virus, affecting a 46-year-old doctor and his 15-year-old daughter, raising alarms among health experts about potential long-term health consequences. The Zika virus, primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, shares vectors with diseases like dengue and chikungunya.

Dr. Jinendra Jain from Wockhardt Hospital highlighted the dual nature of Zika infection, where up to 80% of cases show no symptoms or mild ones such as fever, rash, and joint pain. However, the virus poses significant risks, particularly concerning pregnancy and child development.

Dr. Jain emphasized the severe risks associated with Zika, including microcephaly—a condition causing abnormally small heads and underdeveloped brains in infants born to infected mothers. Even without microcephaly, children may face long-term challenges such as developmental delays and neurological issues.

Dr. Sachin Nalavade, senior consultant at Medicover Hospitals, added that Zika can lead to serious neurological complications like Guillain-Barré syndrome and autoimmune disorders. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable, as Zika infection increases the risk of congenital conditions like vision loss and improper brain development in infants.

Both experts stressed the importance of preventive measures, early detection, and comprehensive medical care to mitigate the long-term impacts of Zika virus. Public awareness and adherence to health guidelines are crucial, particularly for those planning pregnancies.

The outbreak in Pune underscores the ongoing global health challenge posed by Zika virus and the necessity for proactive measures to safeguard public health.
