India Condemns Pakistan’s ‘Politically Motivated’ Kashmir Remarks at UN Debate
  • PublishedJune 27, 2024

India has strongly criticized Pakistan for its “baseless” and “politically motivated” comments regarding Jammu and Kashmir during the United Nations Security Council’s open debate on ‘Children and Armed Conflicts’. R Ravindra, India’s Deputy Representative to the United Nations, denounced Pakistan’s remarks as an attempt to divert attention from serious child rights violations within Pakistan itself.

In response to Pakistan’s representative expressing concern over alleged omissions in a report on children in Jammu and Kashmir, Ravindra dismissed these claims, stating, “I categorically dismiss and condemn these baseless remarks with the contempt they deserve.” He emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir remains an integral part of India, regardless of Pakistan’s stance.

India reiterated its rejection of Pakistan’s persistent efforts to internationalize the Kashmir issue on various UN platforms unrelated to the subject. During the debate, India highlighted the grave violations against children in conflict zones, attributing a majority of these abuses to terrorists and armed groups.

Ravindra underscored the vulnerability of children to extremist ideologies and stressed the need for resolute action against such entities operating within any country’s territory. He referenced the Security Council’s Resolution 1261, marking 25 years since its adoption, emphasizing the ongoing threats faced by children in conflict-ridden areas.

The debate at the UN highlighted contrasting perspectives on regional issues and global concerns related to child welfare amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
