CBI Pushes for Custody of Delhi CM Kejriwal in Liquor Policy Case

  • PublishedJune 26, 2024

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) brought Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal to Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court for a hearing in the liquor policy case. The CBI requested the court to grant custody of Kejriwal for further interrogation and formal arrest. The agency had examined Kejriwal in Tihar Jail on Tuesday, recording his statement related to the Excise Policy case.

Simultaneously, the Supreme Court is set to hear Kejriwal’s petition against the Delhi High Court’s interim stay on his bail in a money laundering case linked to the liquor excise policy. The High Court had stayed the trial court’s bail order, stating that the trial court did not adequately consider the twin conditions of section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Kejriwal has been in custody since March 21, except for a brief interim bail period granted by the Supreme Court for election campaigning. The case involves alleged irregularities in Delhi’s scrapped 2021-22 excise policy, which the CBI began investigating following a recommendation by Delhi’s lieutenant governor in July 2022.
