  • PublishedJune 25, 2024

The second day of the 18th Lok Sabha session commenced at 11 AM today, with the remaining 281 newly elected MPs, including prominent figures like Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, taking their oaths. Union Minister Rajnath Singh is reportedly engaging with opposition leaders to establish a consensus for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions. BJP MP Om Birla is likely to be the NDA candidate for the Speaker’s post and is expected to file his nomination at 11:30 AM.

On Monday, 262 MPs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were sworn in. The session also saw significant discussions on the historical Emergency period, with PM Modi criticising the Congress party’s actions during that time, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised current issues such as NEET irregularities and water scarcity.

The election for the Speaker’s post is scheduled for Wednesday, June 26. The opposition is advocating for the Deputy Speaker’s role if a consensus on the Speaker is not reached. The session has been marked by political exchanges, highlighting the ongoing contest for key parliamentary positions.
