Delhi AAP Ministers Appeal to PM Modi Over Water Crisis Amid Atishi’s Hunger Strike
  • PublishedJune 24, 2024

Delhi’s AAP-led government ministers, including Gopal Rai and Saurabh Bharadwaj, have penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging immediate action to resolve the city’s escalating water crisis. This move comes as Delhi water minister Atishi enters her fourth day of hunger strike, protesting the alleged reduction in water supply from Haryana.

Minister Gopal Rai highlighted that despite Delhi’s population growth over three decades, the city’s water supply remains stagnant at 1,005 MGD, with a significant portion sourced from Haryana. The letter emphasized a recent decline in this supply, impacting millions in Delhi amidst scorching heatwave conditions.

In a press conference, Rai, along with other ministers, expressed concerns over Atishi’s deteriorating health due to the hunger strike. Atishi herself reported elevated ketone levels and declining health indicators. The AAP ministers also announced plans for a candlelight march in solidarity with Atishi’s protest.

The AAP’s efforts to draw attention to the water scarcity issue include demands for Delhi’s rightful share of water allocation and calls for urgent intervention from the central government. Despite assurances from the Lieutenant Governor regarding adequate water supply, AAP leaders stress ongoing deficits affecting numerous Delhi residents.

The situation remains tense as Delhi grapples with sustained water shortages, prompting political exchanges between AAP and BJP officials regarding the management and responsibility for resolving this critical issue.
