Indian Worker Dies After Being Abandoned on Road in Italy Following Severe Injury
Indian farm laborer Satnam Singh died on Wednesday after being left on the road following an accident that severed his arm in Latina, Italy. Singh was injured while working on a farm on Monday and instead of receiving help, he was abandoned near his house, as reported by AFP. Latina, a rural area south of Rome, is home to thousands of Indian migrant workers.
Italian Labour Minister Marina Calderone condemned the act as “barbarity” and announced that authorities are investigating the incident. The Indian embassy in Italy is working with local authorities to provide consular assistance to Singh’s family.
The Flai CGIL trade union criticized Singh’s employer, accusing them of dumping him “like a bag of rubbish” instead of helping him. Singh was reportedly working without proper legal documentation. An air ambulance was dispatched after police were alerted by Singh’s wife and friends.
The Democratic Party condemned the exploitation of workers in the region, calling Singh’s death a “defeat for civilization” and demanding justice and efforts to combat worker exploitation in Latina.
The Embassy is aware of the very unfortunate demise of an Indian national in Latina, Italy. We are in contact with local authorities. Efforts are underway to contact the family and provide consular assistance.@MEAIndia @SecretaryCPVOIA
